Powerfill?

Post by Woodymay » Tue May 20, 2008 8:43 am

Ok. Not going to use paylean on positive pigs. The pigs are weighing 125#. Only got 55 days to show. The pigs are gilts and lean. Would it be OK to start using powerfill to push the hogs at this time? They are on Honor L200, thought about switching to Finisher to lower protein to 18%. They are on free feed right now. Any suggestions? Would like to get the pigs to 260 by weigh in. That's about 2.5# per day.
Thanks

I would feed 4lbs of powerfill per day along with a fat supplement (dont over do it) and all the regular feed you can get into your pig this will help you i think you could get your pig up to weight but its going to take perfect conditions and on a positive pig your not helping yourself.

Woodymay, here is my suggestion:

It is true a 125 lbs pig usually isn't going to gain 2.5 lbs per day. But some do. However, you can average that from now to show.

I would take the pigs off the self feeder. You can get a pig to eat more and grow faster by hand feeding in two equal feedings per day (morning and evening).

We (HONOR) have several products that will help. The L200 you speak of I think is the HONOR Showpig Grower L200 (L200 is actually a medication abbreviation for Lincomycin @ 200 grams/ton...T100 would be Tylan @ 100 grams/ton).

We actually have another L200 denoted feed called Showpig 16. And for lean, heavy muscled gilts that is the one that will do the trick for you. I would convert the gilts to this diet:

3-4 lbs per day HONOR Showpig 16
1-2 lbs per day HONOR Powerfill
1/2 - 1 lbs per day High Octane Power Fuel (new extruded high fat product)
1/2 - 1 lbs per day HONOR Champion Drive Topdress

Once the pigs get to 150 lbs I would pulse Paylean at the 9 grams/ton level. The HONOR Showpig Paylean Premix take 2 ounces (or 2 scoops) to get to the 9 grams/ton level (with 5.75 lbs of feed).

Remember that Paylean does 3 things very well:
1. increase muscle
2. increase growth rate
3. decrease body fat

The increase in growth rate is transient, that is it is not sustained. After starting Paylean, the increased growth peaks at day 14 and subsides to original baseline levels by day 24-28. So, when we really need a lot of growth we "pulse" Paylean for 14 days, remove it for 14 and "pulse" it back in the diet for 14 days.

If you provide enough energy while feeding Paylean the pigs will NOT get to radically lean and heavy muscled. That is the reason I put the Power Fuel in the diet.

Increase the diet above as the pigs grow. For every 25 lbs of growth or so increase the feed by about 1/2 lbs (if the pigs will allow you to do so). They usually will but only up to a point. The limiting factor on feed intake is going to be energy content. Use the Champion Drive to improve muscle shape and the Power Fuel to improve body condition (cover).

Divide the above diet into two equal feedings. Feed the same time every morning and every evening. Exercise in the evening building up to about 45 minutes or so at a time.

And, NEVER limit water except for possibly at the very end when you may need to pull some water weight off the pig...be sure it isn't very hot when you do this.

By the way, when you take the pigs off the self feeder and change their diet they are not going to eat well for a couple of days until they get used to the feeding times and the new diet. But, they will adjust....stick with it.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, went back and read....if you're pigs are stress positive...no forget the Paylean. Are you sure they are stress positive?

If they are, increase the Champion Drive Topdress, this will help replace the Paylean.

No, I'm not sure if they are stress positive. The sire (hope right term) was stress positive, so they should be carriers at the least. One of the pigs became stressed when we walked it one day and starting "freezing" up and stepping backwards. We put her back in the pen and she was fine after about 30 minutes. We try not to push her too much because we are afraid she'll do it again. We have her on Top Dress right now. The honor rep at feed store suggested it, but we need more. I'll try the ration you suggested and keep you informed of results. Thanks so much for everyones help, it is very much appreciated. :D

I think you're probably correct...at least the one sounds stress positive. I wouldn't give her any Paylean.

However, the Powerfill, Power Fuel, and the Champion Drive will help with growth.

PIGGY, it's not polite to call someone a COW, because they asked for a diet tip, the polite thing would of been to say, well really not sure, but this is a site for animals not humans, thank you.

I think Pristie is a virus. I haven't tried it but the word matrimonial under her post in blue wants you to click on it and looks like it would go into another website. I am going to report Pristie.
