Feeding Opinions

Post by buckhunter » Sat May 24, 2008 3:31 pm

We have 2 gilts both with good muscle. 1 weighs 170 lbs. and the other is 162 lbs. There is 56 days until the show and they are getting 18% feed with 5% fat about 5 1/2 lbs a day. Getting ready to put them on 17% with 5% fat at the same amount. The heavier pig has been gaining 1.82 lbs. a day and the lighter pig is gaining 2.04. The top weight can be 280 with no overage. Just wanting some opions since we aren't experts at this but we have some good looking pigs this year and don't want to mess them up. Thanks

Hello. They seem to be right on track! unless your wanting a specific weight or look, they should be ok. warmer weather is coming i think... :? so over weight may not be an issue. feed them for the look you want. just my 17 cents worth. (Inflation :D ) Mark

We think they are going to look best between 255 and 265 so thats where were shooting for but if we can't keep them there without making them look stale we'll just have to be a little heavier. I'm thinking like you though and it will get hot sooner or later.

I understand the "Come on summer" comment. I weighed our pigs yesterday, wow, was I surprised. Mid-Jan Poland #205, Mid Jan Spot #180, Mid-Jan X #170, Mid-Jan Hamp #155. Actually hoping it gets a little hot soon so they will slow down a bit otherwise diets and stairmasters are in order. Good luck with yours.

Yes a little heat and a little less feed and all should be ok. Lots of people here are having to deal with bigger pigs than normal because its been so cool. Be a good year for the people who are pushing one.

temp just went from 80 degrees to 40 here in about 45 minutes. I thought today was a scorcher. I hope it stays in the 60's all summer i would rather worry about a pig growing to fast in ideal conditions that having to stress it out with the heat. It'll get hot eventually the longer the wait the better though.
