First let me thank you in advance for helping me! You've helped me in the past and I truly appreciate you!
Lysine - I know it's an amino acid and it's very important and that's all I know!
Is there a thumb rule or a formula that explains what % of lysine is necessary for a particular pig weight or what % of lysine is appropriate for a certain % of protein?
Thanks!
To KGB - Lysine question
Thank you for those kind words.
Basically, lysine as expressed in grams per day increases as pigs grow. Lysine as expressed as a % of the diet decreases as the pig grows, because the pig is eating more as it gets bigger.
Hope that makes sense. Here is a suggestion for lysine as expressed as a % of the feed and pig weight. It is also important to note that this is also when pigs are on self feed.
Pig wt. % lysine
50 - 100 1.2
100 - 150 1.0
150 - 200 0.9
200 - 250 0.8
But, most people, or at least they should hand feed from at least 150 lbs to show, and really it should probably be more like 100 lbs to show.
In that regard, here is what I think modern, heavily muscled showpigs need per day:
Pig Wt. Lysine grams/day
50 - 100 14 - 16
100 - 150 16 - 18
150 - 200 18 - 20
200 - 250 23 - 25
Again, just my opinion. Also, these recommendations are based on diets fed that are reasonably high in energy content.

Figure it this way:
453.6 grams in one lb.
So, 453.6 X % lysine (remember to move the decimal two places to the left; example 1.2% = 0.012 is what you would multiply by)
Then X by the lbs of feed per day. For example - Your feeding 5 lbs of a 1.2% lysine feed.
453.6 X 0.012 X 5 = 27.22 grams lysine per day
453.6 grams in one lb.
