Slopping feed
Slopping feed
Do's and Don't to slopping,Pro's and Con's?
We do it as much as possible. The only cons I can mention is if they don't eat it all you will waste some feed because it will sour. Also you need to keep your pans clean. The pros are you get more liquid in them especially at shows where water intake can be limited. If you can get them eating it at home then it's great when you get to the show. And it seems to help with gut fill especially when soaking with a fiber supplement. They seem to eat beet pulp and groats better when soaked. And if you are holding it seems to make them feel fuller with the smaller ration.
Slopping feed
We usually pour in about 1/3 to 1/2 of the feeder with water and then dump the feed on top and the pig will mix it by pushing the feed into the water and slurp the water up at the same time.

Slopping feed
We did not use Depth Charge because it does expand wet...but man--with wet slop the pigs couldn't pick out just the chip morsels in Moore Body and they ate that stuff real good when we wet slopped it--so we got filler AND fluids in at the same time. Haven't used beet pulp but I imagine it would work the same.

Depth Charge doesn't expand immediately. If the pig eats fairly quickly it will work with water or not.
