Holding

Post by ddwil » Thu May 04, 2017 6:14 am

What are the best methods to holding showpigs for a late July Fair that are weighing around 125 currently. They are getting 3 1/2 lbs of 19% pellets per day. Very balanced, high quality showpigs

All this depends on the target weights of the show and your pig. Don't take a small framed pig and try and make them a heavy weight. I would let them continue to gain until they are about 150 lbs by free feeding them or hand feeding them all they want.

We used PowerFill and it worked really well to keep them gaining what we wanted but also giving them the nutrients they needed with such a small amount of feed. You are in pretty good shape (Unless I am missing some information). If you gain 1.5 lbs a day over the next 90 days you will hit 260. I would keep their gain to where you can put about 2lbs a day on them in the last 30 days. Weigh them very frequently so that you can be flexible in your feeding.

MJW is spot on. You want to try and do your holding in the middle after 150 pounds.

Couple of things to keep in mind:

1. Powerfill can be used with regular feed as a supplement to help hold. Only in extreme cases of holding would you need to use it exclusively.
2. Powerfill is high in Lysine and helps you get the 25 daily grams that pigs need when limiting feed.
3. Use this product with fillers such as Depth Charge and Ultra Full.
4. Contact Dr. Kevin Burgoon KGBurgoon@landolakes.com He's the nutritionist and has formulated most of the swine feeds at Purina and he is always willing to put together feeding plans to help you achieve your goals. He is the most interactive and knowledgeable of any feed rep I have tried to engage. He also has a bunch of feeding guides with specifics on what to use for Average Daily Gain goals.

Be patient and let the products work :) (that was more for me than for you).

Good Luck!

Your hogs are the right size. Should not have to hold them at all as long as you put them on the right diet.

I would agree that your hogs are the right size and you should not have to hold. I would actually say that you should be feeding more than 3 1/2 lbs per day at this stage.
