Purina 219 creep feed not for swine intended for breeding?

Post by LGM » Sun Jan 07, 2024 10:27 am

I have a nice litter of pigs 10 days old was planning on starting purina219 creep feed it says on the bag not to use in swine intended for breeding purposes, I would like to retain a couple of these gilts for my breeding program. Is this product used as a creep feed going to effect the breed ability of these young gilts when they mature? Thanks for any help.

219 is medicated with Carbadox (mecadox). That language is required on the tag by the FDA on all feeds medicated with Carbadox. It also says not to feed to pigs weighing more than 75 lbs.

This is because the drug manufacturer submitted data to the FDA on market pigs under 75 lbs. The FDA will only approve usage statements on data submitted. Much like the original data fir Paylean when it was first approved in 2000. At that time it said not for pigs weighing more than 240 lbs. Elanco resubmitted data with heavier pigs and the FDA approved different language.

Long story short; it’s fine to feed to young pigs of either sex.
