I'm looking for opinions about keeping a gilt that was intended to breed if she has had a rectal prolapse.
Any ones opinion is appreciated.
Breeding gilt that has had rectal prolapse?
Re: Breeding gilt that has had rectal prolapse?
We have a 3 1/2 year old sow, she is about to have her third litter, she had a rectal prolapse when she was seven months old. The vet recommend to get rid of her, but we kept he anyway and she hasn't had any problems since. A gilt we kept out of her did get a prolapse and eventually died. I don't know if it was hereditary, genetics, or just bad luck that she died. We did have a cross gilt we bought, thinking she was stress positive, 3 weeks later I found her prolapsed and dead.
Good luck on what you do with yours, we've had good and bad luck with ours.

Prevention will go a long way. I would always add about 1/4 cup of bran flakes everyday to this gilts diet (even when not bred) and then more as she goes into the crate, with farrowing, following farrowing and I bet she will do just fine.
