Ever had one like this?

Post by bren » Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:57 pm

I have a young sow that I will breed next month. She had her first litter this last March.

For the past 3 cycles, she gets really weak, goes off feed, gets a high temp and acts like she is going to die right as she is due to come in. She will literally stagger around, and just want to lay down.

The first two times, I treated her like she was getting sick because of the extreme weather changes we have experienced.( Banamine, Baytril) She would snap right back.

Now, I see a pattern. What is up with this? I realize some can go off feed during their cycle, but never had go to this extreme. Anybody have input?

What bred is she?

Son's March 2013 Hereford gilt acts like this. I could not belive my eyes that she started cycling @ 3 mths. NEVER had a Hereford to cycle this early in 4 yrs. We've gone through 2 cycles like what you described and or vet told us to give her iron paste, along with a b-complex shot while she's cycling. So when she cycles for the next time we will do this and see what happens. Don't have plans on breeding her until Nov.
