PRE CRATE PROTOCOL

Post by TDODD » Mon Sep 02, 2013 10:21 am

Im wanting to know what others do just before you put your sows/gilts in the crate. Just before farrowing, do you cut back on their feed, do you give an enema, do you give mineral oil. What? Mostly im interested in knowing what is the best routine to prevent constipation.Thanks.

we use a product called: Mo-milk. Google it, you can find it at PBSanimalhealth.com. It is to keep them loose and not constipated. Good luck, Piggy

Nothing special just wash them up and move them in.

Top dressing mo milk is not a bad idea if you have a constipation issue. It is just like Metamucil and won't dehydrate them> Magnesium sulfate is cheaper but it draws water into the gut and can dehydrate them when you consider the water they are also using to make milk.

If you are going to use the CA supplement you can top dress it as well.

I'm not a fan on cutting back feed until right before farrowing.

Hog Doc
Cutting feed right before farrowing means, what?

1/2 feeding last 24 hrs?

Generally for us we just limit feed to half or so the very last feeding the morning before we expect them to farrow. It isn't that big a deal if they eat full feed that morning either.

We dont have a constipation problem and dont want one. We ve had sows/gilts that have not had any problem and have a rough delivery and get constipated. We normally do cut feed back 24 hrs before but I was just curious as to what others do for preventive maintenance. When they get constipated it can be disasterous.

We don't have a constipation problem either, but before we fed mo-milk, we always had one or almost always had one after farrowing. If I cannot get them to "go" after farrowing, we let them out of the crate and walk them. Put them back in the crate and if they did not "go" while walking, they usually go after being loaded back in the crate. The problem with constipation, it is usually after farrowing that that have it. I watch this very closely as this usually causes problems with milking and eating. I never let them go even 12 hours without "going". Feeding mo milk will usualy prevent all of this, and I was without it this year because I forgot to order, but no problems in the farrowing house yet, knock on wood. Hope this helps. Piggy

How many days before you put them in the crate do you worm them?

We've always wormed them the day after they get their 2 wk perfarrowing shot.

If you order the mo milk top dress, it should have a little scoop in it or directions on the bag. I just put my hand in it and give em some ,not a whole hand full but about 3 tbls. Hope this helps. Google it and see if you find some directions. if in a pinch, buy you some generic metamusel, same thing. Piggy
