We have 2 gilts, both cycled previously before starting them on Matrix. We administered Matrix for 14 days, ending on Sunday, April 15. We have been checking them twice a day, every day since then. There have been some signs of oestrus, but they come and go with neither of them remotely being in standing heat. Semen was collected on Monday, and received on Tuesday. We don't have a teaser boar but did use the boar scent spray.
MY QUESTIONS ARE THIS: 1. ARE WE NOT BEING PATIENT ENOUGH AND TRYING TO RUSH THE AI PROCESS? 2. DO GILTS EVER "NOT STAND" DURING OESTRUS?
CROSS GILT:
-Wednesday: was a bit swollen with discharge (not stringy), no standing heat
- Thursday morning: less swollen, less discharge, no standing heat
- Thursday evening: more swollen, less discharge, no standing heat
- Friday morning: less swollen, more discharge, no standing heat
DUROC GILT:
-Wednesday: no symptoms
-Thursday morning: small amount of swelling, no discharge, no standing heat
-Thursday evening: more swelling, no discharge, no standing heat
- Friday morning: less swelling, no discharge, no standing heat
ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED AS WE ARE STARTING TO PANIC ABOUT THE LENGTH OF TIME IT HAS BEEN SINCE THE SEMEN WAS COLLECTED! Thanks in advance!
Gilts not standing on Day 5 after Matrix - ADVICE NEEDED, TIME SENSITIVE!
Re: Gilts not standing on Day 5 after Matrix - ADVICE NEEDED, TIME SENSITIVE!
Some gilts can be very temperamental to get them to stand. It does help a bunch to have a boar around.
If you can find any pg600 it could help. My purely anecdotal observations is that a pg600 shot improves heat timing regardless of previous cycle.
Other options are some form of stress nducement like mixing with another gilt/s or putting in the trailer hauling around and then place in another pen.
