A week late is NOT okay. Those pigs will really be big by then! Berkshires can go 114 to 118 days, 117 to 118 is pretty normal here. 120 to 121 days would be out of the question. It is difficult to raise hogs in an area were the producers and vet's don't have a clue. My new Vet said "I know just enough to be dangerous". He is really good at drawing blood though!

Dr Hendrickson can next-day-air you the Lutalyse and will not need to communicate with your local vet.

UPDATE: Still no pigs. I called Dr. Hendrickson, he was not in his office and did not answer his cell. I left him a message and he has not returned my call. My vet has not called me about the posts I gave her either. She is out of the office every time I have time to call. I talked to the "pig guy" here at CSU and he told me that a lot of people in Colorado are having late pigs and not to really worry until they are a week late. So I don't know who to believe anymore. I don't get a straight answer. He told me that if they are not on the ground by about Friday morning that that is when I should induce. =/ I just wish they would farrow.

If you really just wish they would farrow, induce them and get it over with. Whining about it on here isn't going to help anything. You've been helped. Take the advice and take action.

Darin,
I'd like to. But unfortunately I need a VET to prescribe me the drugs the induce. My vet won't do it, the vet on here has not called me back. I'm doing what I can. I have taken the advice, unfortunately, no one else seems to think it's right. I even printed all these posting and gave them to my vet. I'm going to call the vet in the morning and beg her to listen to me. That's all I can do.

Call Hendrickson's office back and tell Sheila you want to speak with Duane. Tell him your situation and he can work with you.

Here is another number to try. They can next day air medication out also and will prescribe you the meds if you tell them the situation. Name is Dr. Amy Woods and Dr. Tom Gellespie. Buisness name is Rensselaer Swine Service and the number is 219-866-6465 or 877-866-7675 You can call them 24 hours a day. There is always a vet on call and will return your call. OR you can make it more easy on yourself and just fax in your order form to them and have them ship out the medication. Here is the link to the website with the order form. http://rssvet.com/products.htm Print it out, put down what you need and fax it to them. They are GREAT people to work with. After you fax it give them a call and ask to speak with Dr. Amy about the proper amount of meds to give to induce. If she isnt in the office ask for her cell. She always gets back to you within an hour.

There are still cattle vets in Colorado, right? Any cattle vet would have lut also. Just start calling until you get someone who will sell it to you. Surely there is a vet somewhere in your state with some common sense. Really doesn't need to be this big of a deal. If the vet you called won't help, it's time for a different vet.

Darin is right. Its not like you are asking for Telazol! Your vet comes across as a bit self centered. Our local vet specializes in bovine & equine but when we need something PDQ he will write us a prescription and if we have a question and he doesn't know the answer he will call A&M and get back with us quickly with a logical answer. He cut his first hog ever on our farm a few months back. We get all of our specialty from Dr. Dale but still need a local guy to draw blood and write health papers. Its all about principal & character! Find you a vet that values you as a customer and that is willing to expand their knowledge as a professional. I wish you all the luck with your hogs and in finding a vet you can work with!

Well I finally found a vet that will give me what I need. He is about an hour from where the pigs are. I'm picking it up today and giving the shot. better late than never I suppose. After the vet we had been using ignored me once again I said enough and found another that will listen. So I should have pigs by tomorrow. I'll probably post more if I find that I have problems. Thanks for all the help!

Ok so this is not going well. I gave a 2cc injection to each pig of lut on Friday night at about 9 pm. It is now 11:30 on Sunday morning and there are still no pigs. There is swelling and some discharge (clear) but still no milk. Why is this taking so long? I know some people said to give it near the vulva but the other vet I got the stuff from said specifically to give in the neck in case they have an allergic reaction. He told me to go to the website for the drug and I read:
"We are not aware of any clinical studies that have shown consistent differences in efficacy based on injection site. Several studies, however, compared perivulvar or submucosal full and half doses given in the vulva. The results were equivocal. "
We had no problems getting it in. I've read that most people have them within 36 hours...it has now been about 38 hours. I am at a complete loss here and not sure where to go. I also read on that website that 89% farrow within 36 hours and 100% in 72. So I'm hoping they are still on the way.

Well we had them ultrasounded a month before their due date and it showed that they were. All three pigs are doing the "mothering thing" like grunting when you pull on their nipples and are getting huge bellies. The sow is bagged up and they have had discharge on and off the last few days so yes, judging from that I believe they are bred. I wouldn't be going through all this trouble if I wasn't sure.

I gave a follow up shot of lut at about 1 today so I still have about another 36 hours before I call the vet. On the website it said it can take up to 72 hours to work.

The bigger gilt is finally having some moisture from her teets and has a huge swollen vulva so I'm hoping she will go tonight. Not sure about the other two. Im staying optimistic.
