Blood on Rod

Post by dave » Tue Mar 18, 2008 7:40 am

Ran into something this morning on a sow. When i went to breed her I had a hard time getting the rod to lock in. I felt like i was hitting something solid. Finally it went in and locked into place. When I pulled the rod out there was a little blood on it. Had this happen on a gilt a couple times but never a sow. I'm curious if it will be that way in the morning when I breed her the 2nd time. What is my chances of her settleing?

this happened to me the first time i used a foam rod. I pulled it out, unknowingly, while she was having a contraction and had some blood on it. She ended up settling.

We've had this happen a few times over the years and the sows have settled. We had a york boar who scraped the end of his unit on concrete (he was a bit of an exhibitionist) and caused it to bleed. He ended up settling 3 or 4 sows before it healed enough to stop bleeding. You should be fine.
Blood isn't a big factor in semen mortality. It does cause a little but it is nominal enough to not be real concerned about it.

I just had this happen to a chester sow. Hopefully you will have better luck than me. She ended up with too much scare tissue on her cervix after the vet checked her. So she was unable to be bred and I had to ship her. However, sometimes as sows age and have had several litters thier cervix changes positions so you might have just cut her a little.
