best boar discussion

Post by Mary-Okie » Mon Dec 17, 2012 7:55 am

Just to have a little fun and to possibly gain a little more info on some boars, I thought I would pose this question:

Within each of these boar studs and farms, which is their best crossbred boar? And why?

Lean Value Sires
Top Cut
Hi Point
Moyer's
Cutting Edge
Triple B
Crossroads Genetics
PSSS
McCoy
Shaffer's goldrush
Cain farms
Shipley
4K Farms

Not all are on here, so if there is a legitimate high end crossbred boar that is not at one of these places and needs to be mentioned, then make your case.

No need to provide input on all if you don't have anything on some of them.

Happy posting!

4kfarms

Without a doubt Hillbilly Bone and Big Motor. There are two new boars that may be heard from in the future that have not been pictured, only talked to Kirk about them, Let r eat and Black Powder.

I think Kelton Masons stud also. Side Show Bob and War Wagon dominated the south last year, no reason they won't do it again considering Side Show wasn't bred to many sows. I also believe Sylvester is gonna make a huge splash down there this winter.

Ill chime in on my favorite crossbred boars at Crossroads... I have had the privilege to see each of the boars quite a few times. In terms of Light Cross boars Catalyst is for sure one of my all time favorites. Going into his second season he was still had an absolutely monster chest floor laid in him and an awesome hip. His winners list this summer spoke for itself. However, another notable boar that has had some very good younger pigs is Drop Down. He is a little more moderate and super "boxy" made. He has a tremendous hip laid in him and his babies looked the part this fall. I'm really excited to see how they feed out.

As far as Dark Crossbred boars are concerned one can't argue that Shoot 'Em is one of the top boars in the country when mated to the correct female. He dominated the crossbred classic this year, and got used hard by some of the bigger breeders this breeding season. Of the newer dark boars, the one that really grew on me each visit was Funky Monkey. This dude will absolutely make some killer show barrows. Ultra square at the base, big volumed, and super square up top. He is a really complete kind of boar that can be used on a wide variety of sows to add that extra squareness while keeping them from getting too "freaky". I think those pigs will feed very well also by the way he grew up.

As far as I see it they may not have the number of boars as some of the other studs, but the quality is there for sure. Extremely good set of boars over there in Clayton! There are some other great boars in the other studs around, but I can't give an honest opinion on them. This is due to the fact that I have not gotten to see them in person other than at the shows. With Crossroads being 20 minutes from my house I manage to see the boars a few times a year.

Crossroads....

Everyone raves over shoot'em and he is a great boar to breed too. I did this year and they turned out great. I don't think drop down gets the credit he should because of catalyst and shoot'em. I used drop down this year as well and was all in favor of the dominant litter to be shoot'ems because of all the talk about him. I have to say I was wrong, I couldnt be more pleased with drop down. He made some outstanding barrows as well as gilts.

I think that Lairds should be in there to, due to the fact that they have Bone Collector and Gunslinger. Went and took a look at them and was very impressed with their line up of boars. Our best prospects are out of Bone Collector, and we used him and Gunslinger the hardest for state fairs.

Shaffer's best boar is Mile High. Looking forward to seeing his pigs.

By a hundred miles, Mile High piglets were real easy to sell---had a champion cross at a sale because he was the most balanced and overall fit to his skeleton. They were born 20 July so they should be finishing out mid Jan to first of Feb (no weight limit w/the early Feb show). Oh by the way, litter came from a Shaffer's bred gilt.

I have only personally seen the boars at two places, so that is all I will comment on.

Shipleys...

I thought Pitbull was far and above their best boar. He is way better than any of the other crosses although i have not seen some of the new ones but they do not look like they are his caliber. That boar is the best crossbred they have had in there in a long time. I did look through the purebreds but not really closely so I cannot really say on them.

McCoys...

I went to their boar stud open house and have been there one time since. Yorks, Moonshine looked alright for his age but he was pretty overconditioned, it doesnt matter, his siring capability has spoken for itself. True Grit I thought looked good. Hamps, their new Bushog boar was impressive, one that they put alot of faith in and I think is worth using. Cross, McCoy has a really nice cross line up. My personal favorite was a new boar that will have no spring pigs because his semen was bad, but Bonafide. He came straight from 4K Farms. Wide Based, heavy boned, extremely sound. Good Muscle, good boar. But there were a couple of others that I thought were not far behind. Armogeddon, their Super Monster son and Walker, the hillbilly bone son that they raised, I thought were really good solid boars that do alot of things right.

Monrovia, did you have a chance to see Chain Reaction at Crossroads and if so what did you think of him.

I had a late Sept litter of 15 out of Drop Down and was very pleased with the overal consistecey of the litter. 8 of the pigs are being shown with others that could have been but they were a little late for our Mid Feb shows.

Unfortunately, Chain Reaction was hurt when I went to look so I did not get a chance to see him. He was used pretty hard, and is out of a really good sow. I look forward to seeing how his pigs look this spring.

If you have one that needs to be a little easier moving he should do the job. He is a fault free boar, and sires pretty true to his design in my experience using him and seeing other litters sired by him. If someone wanted to protect him, I would say maybe he could have maybe a tic more bone. However with that said, he wont take any away from you. He isn't the most extreme boar out there, but he sure does make them balanced and super attractive! We used him on our best crossbred gilt I have ever had the chance to drive. She is a White Collar X Detox and is due for a middle of January litter. We feel like this could be a home-run mating... Hope that helped.
