Best Hamp Program?

Post by Logandew » Wed Jan 04, 2017 12:18 pm

I am curious what everyone thinks who has the best set of Hamp boars and or produces the best Hamp gilts. Looking into getting my first pure Hamp gilt and wonder where I should go.

The 2 places that really come to mind are Heimer Hampshires and Cain Super Sires both are very reputable and easy to work with.

You need to check out Joe Lancaster in Oklahoma. I see Cain Super Sires already mentioned, but if you dig into Cain's genetics, you will find a large volume of Lancaster bloodlines in there. Probably one of the more well kept secret Hampshire places in the country.

Well I do have to chime in about the Hamp breed. Back say, maybe 15 years or so, I saw where this b reed was going. We almost lost it. Thankfully some of the very good breeders set out to try and save it. You could NOT find a gilt that would breed, if she bred, she aborted, if she was in heat she would not stand, if she farrowed, she was a terrible mother, etc. Not all, but some. If you could get a good middle of the road set on the ground, and from a "maternal" line, you had a goldmine. thankfully, now they are coming back to being the Hampshire of old. The "MeatHOG". It is and always was, my favorite breed. We went out on a huge limb and purchased two pure hamp gilts last year, very pricey ones. We bred to Hi Point boars, Both of them bred, laid down and farrowed 10 pigs each and milked like Jersey cows. The result was each had 7 gilts in the litters. These gilts are some of the best hamps we have seen in a long time, and not saying this because they are ours. We have a critical eye for the hamps. I think Hi Point has the strongest line up of hamp boars today. They will get the job done. I don't think Heimer sells any hamp semen and Cain has never been on our radar. Good luck with your breeding and hopefully you have the same luck that we did. PK

The Thunderstuck line at Cain is from Heimer so if you want Heimer semen you can buy it there.

The Thunderstruck semen itself can be kind of pricey. But they do have clones that are a lot more affordable.

I would say Jerry McLemore
Just look at the Pedigrees of the hogs being shown today
Agusta, Carry On ect. If you look at any of the pedigrees
you will see JLM in them.
