For the people that have used him, what did you see from his babies, what did he add and where does he need to be protected

For starters, I agree with you. It's a fundamental problem that will affect performance (like that actually matters) when you consider the amount of farrowing difficulties that are accepted.
You must of missed the 2012 Crossbred Classic! I heard it many times, "There is too much good in this gilt to not use her just because she is down on her pasterns".
Fischer could have drawn the line by putting those pigs down in class but he chose to use them. Also, 5 nipples on one side is no longer an issue either, using the same reasoning to overlook another basic production requirement. The incessant chase of wider and heavier boned is creating some fundamental problems that will be difficult and challenging to breed away from.

So your saying if the best gilt you have raised and you think that she is the best in the country you would ship her if she had 5 on one side? Nobody cares anymore, if that 5 titter can make a champ barrow who cares how many she has. We are not raising commercial hogs and emphasis is not on productivity.

Making a champ piglet and raising a piglet to grow as a champion could be more than a reality if there are only 5 teats on one side and the sow has 14-16 babies---too much fighting/scraping for the teat line up battles---high stressed litter...decreased immune system...increased susceptibility for infection...increased injury to legs, hips, feet. I would never keep a sow with just 5 teats.

Well the thing is she had 12 not 5. Would you keep your best gilt if she had a 6-6 underline?mtbkmom wrote: I would never keep a sow with just 5 teats.
I'm not saying I don't worry about that stuff because we do. But I'm just playing devils advocate.

What are you doing playing devil's advocate....HA! I will say that was a blanket statement on my part...not knowing details could be an exception to the thought behind just 5 on one side---like...was she missing the teats toward the front legs (better producing) or toward the rear legs (less productive). Still I think 7 on one side and 5 on another could be a nightmare for the pecking order of the litter...this is all a matter of preference & I just can't see being a root cause of stress in a litter by perpetuating less than desirable breeding traits.
