My son is in his third year showing pigs in FFA. His barrow is a blue butt cross and weighs 185lbs. We have 33 days until we weigh in. He has broad shoulders and nice hams. He wants to add as much weight as he can. Minimum weight is 230lb and maximum is 299lb.
He is hand feeding twice a day with daily exercise. He is feeding 3 pound 16% base feed with 4oz heavy weight twice a day. We have other purina supplements ready on hand. What would be the best recipe for increasing top cover and gaining weight? Also, when we start using the supplements, do we omit the base feed or mix with the base feed.
Thank you for your time.

Re: 33 days until weigh in
When you say top cover, do you mean add muscle or he need more fat/softness?
Champion drive will do really well to help with top side muscle. You can increase heavy weight to 8oz per feeding also.
Does the pig clean up the feed? Is there room to feed more?

Re: 33 days until weigh in
When you start feeding the supplements don't omit the base feed. When you say add as much weight as you can. What is the pigs frame like. There are some pigs that should not be a heavy weight or some pigs that don't need to be a light weight. You need to make sure you find the proper finishing weight for him. We had a barrow last year that didn't need to be over 240 because he was just a smaller framed pig and then a gilt that needed to be pushing 270 because of her frame size. Just going big is not always the best answer.
IF you are feeding Champion drive and heavy weight you have most of the bases covered.
